Closed in 1965, the Newtown School and Community Association is dedicated to telling the unique story of the community's refusal to narrow its ambitions. Of all the colored schools opened in the region, only the Newtown (East Elkton) School building still exists today as a reminder of the challenges that African Americans faced during the Jim Crow era in the United States.
